What is Beshkan?
“Beshkan” is traditional Persian two handed finger snapping. We don’t know how traditional it is, or when it originated, but we do have some live footage to show you that you, too, can make this freaky sound. No double jointedness required. Ordinary hands will suffice.
This video will show you what Beshkan is:

Did that all happen too fast for you? Click here for a video that breaks down the steps of Beshkan. Follow the steps and you will be Beshkaning in no time!
As you will see comparing the two videos, some people’s “Beshkan’s” are louder than others. The video on this page stars Touran Khanom (turAn xAnom), and the how two video is me.
Touran Khanom (turAn xAnom) demonstrates her Beshkan.
Purpose of Beshkan
If you can “Beshkan,” you’re halfway there to dancing Persian. In fact, sometimes just standing on the dance floor and “Beshkan-ing” is enough to qualify as dancing, especially if you “Beshkan” in the general direction of some other fine dancer in order to accentuate their moves. To sum up:
- Use “Beshkan” to express appreciation for other dancers.
- Use it to dance and keep rhythm.
- Use it to make a lot of noise!
- Impress your friends.
